MPEG-II MULTICHANNEL This
is the 5.1 channel digital surround system originally intended for
Region 2 DVD discs that was dropped in favour of Dolby Digital. MPEG-II
is based around existing audio and video compression technology used
mainly in home computing. The format is still used as the encoding
and decoding technique for digital television in the UK, for encoding
video onto DVD discs, and some early DVD Video discs carry an MPEG
stereo or the lesser used Multichannel sound alternative to the required
Dolby Digital. Decoders are almost non-existant and it is certain
that MPEG-II Multichannel will ever be a serious threat to the DVD
Dolby Digital soundtrack.
